Four people were killed and three others were injured in a house explosion in Plum, Pennsylvania on Saturday. The explosion caused flames to spread to nearby homes, resulting in shattered windows and crumbling walls. As of late Saturday night, one person remained unaccounted for.
The incident occurred when the police responded to a report of a house explosion at around 10 a.m. in Plum, a borough in Allegheny County. Three homes on Rustic Ridge Drive were completely destroyed by the blast, while approximately a dozen others suffered varying degrees of damage. The cause of the explosion is still unknown at this time.
Authorities did not release the names or ages of the victims, but the Plum Borough Police Department confirmed that two of the injured individuals were in stable condition, while the third was in critical condition by Saturday night.
Steve Imbarlina, the assistant chief for Allegheny County emergency services, stated during a news conference that investigation into the cause of the explosion was ongoing. Representatives from multiple gas companies were present at the scene and cooperating with investigators.
Imbarlina urged individuals not from the neighborhood to stay away and allow emergency responders to carry out their duties without interruption.
Photos and videos of the aftermath depicted a row of homes reduced to splinters, emitting smoke. Firefighters navigated through debris composed of wood and ash. Footage obtained by WTAE, a local news station, included the sound of the explosion disrupting the quiet of a nearby baseball game. Another clip showed a doorbell camera capturing the moment of the explosion, which sent a plume of fire and smoke into the sky.
Governor Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania expressed his administration’s support for county and local emergency responders on Twitter, stating that they were coordinating with the state’s emergency management agency.
The investigation into the cause of the explosion is expected to continue as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
