Chelsea have agreed to sign defender Axel Disasi from AS Monaco for a fee of 45 million euros (£38.57 million). The 25-year-old France international will provide Chelsea with another option at right-sided centre-back following Wesley Fofana’s injury. Fofana is expected to be out for several months after undergoing anterior cruciate ligament surgery. Additionally, Benoit Badiashile is currently injured and will not be fit until after the Premier League season starts.

As it stands, Chelsea have Thiago Silva, Trevoh Chalobah, and Levi Colwill as their centre-back options. Disasi, who played in all 38 of Monaco’s Ligue 1 games last season, has made 118 appearances for the club since joining from Stade de Reims in August 2020. He has also earned four caps for France, making his full international debut in the World Cup defeat by Tunisia in November 2020.

This signing will make Disasi Chelsea’s third summer acquisition, following the arrivals of forwards Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku. The Blues are also close to completing a deal for Rennes midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu, who could be loaned to Ligue 1 side Strasbourg. Brighton, on the other hand, have rejected multiple bids from Chelsea for Ecuadorian midfielder Moises Caicedo.

The summer transfer window has seen significant changes at Chelsea, with several players leaving the club. Departures include Mateo Kovacic, Edouard Mendy, Kalidou Koulibaly, N’Golo Kante, Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Christian Pulisic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Ethan Ampadu, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and former captain Cesar Azpilicueta.

Chelsea’s new manager, Mauricio Pochettino, is reshaping his squad after taking over from Frank Lampard. The club’s ownership group has also recently acquired a majority stake in Strasbourg, which could play a role in Ugochukwu’s potential loan move to the French club.
