This Morning host Alison Hammond has been criticized by a young fundraiser for not attending a charity event that she had promised to be present at. During an interview on Friday (11th August), Hammond spoke with eight-year-old Tony Hudgell, who had both his legs amputated as a result of abuse by his biological parents when he was a baby. Hudgell had previously appeared on the ITV show to discuss his charity trek up Orrest Head, a hill in the Lake District, and Hammond had assured him that she would be there for the expedition.

However, Hammond failed to show up, and Hudgell did not let her off the hook. While speaking to Hammond via video link, alongside his adoptive parents Paula and Mark, he told her, “We needed you – you never came.” Hammond’s co-host Josie Gibson found the situation amusing, but Hammond quickly responded by explaining that she was recording an episode of Bake Off at the time and couldn’t make it. She apologized to Hudgell, admitting her disappointment and assuring him that she would try her best to be present next time.

At the end of the interview, Gibson revealed that Hudgell had successfully raised over £40,000. Gibson then mentioned that Hammond had some news to share. Hammond suggested adding £500 to the fundraising total as a way of making up for not being there. Hudgell smiled and agreed to the gesture.

In March 2023, it was announced that Hammond would be joining Channel 4’s The Great British Bake Off as a replacement for Matt Lucas, alongside Noel Fielding.

The incident involving Hammond’s absence from the charity event raises questions about the importance of honouring promises, especially when it comes to supporting a cause as significant as Hudgell’s. Despite Hammond’s apology and offer to contribute to the fundraising, her absence undoubtedly affected the event and may have disappointed those who were expecting her presence.

It is worth noting that Hammond’s career has seen significant growth, with her joining high-profile shows such as This Morning and soon The Great British Bake Off. However, this incident serves as a reminder of the responsibility that comes with fame, particularly in supporting and prioritizing charitable initiatives.

Moving forward, it is crucial for public figures like Hammond to uphold their commitments and be mindful of the impact their actions can have on the individuals and causes they associate themselves with. While it is understandable that conflicts may arise in scheduling, communication and transparency are key in order to avoid disappointment and maintain trust.

All in all, Hammond’s failure to attend the charity event has highlighted the importance of integrity and responsibility, especially when it comes to supporting charitable causes. It serves as a reminder that fame should not overshadow the obligations to those in need, and that public figures should always strive to fulfill their commitments and promises.
