DC fans were left confused and scratching their heads after the latest development regarding Wonder Woman 3. In December 2022, it was announced that DC would not be moving forward with the franchise, just days after Gal Gadot expressed excitement about returning as the superhero character.

This decision came after James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as chiefs of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The Hollywood Reporter claimed that the treatment for the film “did not fit in with” the studio’s plans. Initially, Gadot said she felt “empowered” by the decision. However, in an interview with ComicBook.com, she revealed that she had heard from James Gunn and Peter Safran that they would develop Wonder Woman 3 together.

Gadot further stated in a recent interview with Flaunt magazine that she was invited to a meeting with Gunn and Safran, and they assured her that she was in good hands and had nothing to worry about. However, Variety is now reporting that there are no active plans to develop a new Wonder Woman film, and there was never a definitive discussion with Gadot about her return as the character.

This has led to widespread confusion among fans. Many are questioning whether Gadot or Gunn and Safran were dishonest about the future of the project. Some wonder why Gadot claimed not just once, but twice, that a third Wonder Woman film was happening. Others point out that Gunn, who regularly debunks incorrect claims about the DCEU, has not commented on Gadot’s comments.

The situation is being compared to the controversy surrounding Henry Cavill, who was dropped as Superman shortly after his post-credit scene in Dwayne Johnson’s film Black Adam. Cavill had previously assured fans that he would continue in his role as Superman but later confirmed he would not be returning.

DC fans are expressing their frustration with the situation, calling it a “hot mess.” The Independent has reached out to Gadot and Gunn’s representatives for comment.

Gal Gadot made her debut as Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016 and starred in her standalone movie the following year. She reprised the role in the sequel Wonder Woman 1984 in 2020 and most recently appeared as Wonder Woman in The Flash.

While Gunn and Safran have numerous DC projects in the works, with a slate of forthcoming releases, a new Wonder Woman project was not included. As fans eagerly await clarification on the future of Wonder Woman 3, they can read reviews of Gadot’s new Netflix film, which has been described as “drab” and “forgettable.”
