An iconic Vogue cover featuring Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Tatjana Patitz, Linda Evangelista, and Cindy Crawford from 1990, capturing the era of the Nineties supermodel, has been recreated more than 30 years later. The recreated photograph will appear on the cover of the UK and US editions of Vogue with the cover line: “The Greatest of All Time”. However, the original model, Tatjana Patitz, who passed away earlier this year, will be missing from the new cover. The original photograph was published on the January 1990 edition of Vogue and has now been reimagined for the September 2023 cover.

These four models will also be appearing in an upcoming four-part Apple TV+ docuseries called The Super Models, where they will reflect on their careers in the late Eighties and early Nineties. The show is set to premiere on September 20th. Campbell, Turlington, Patitz, and Evangelista are considered pioneers in the modeling industry and are known for becoming celebrities and household names beyond the fashion world.

In an interview with Vogue, Campbell shared her experiences from the early days of her modeling career, emphasizing the sisterhood and loyalty among the models. She stated, “There was a sisterhood there, defined by caring and loyalty: when one is down, you pick the other one up.” Evangelista also opened up about her own experiences, discussing her use of Botox and her fascination with aging. She said, “I don’t mind and I never did mind aging. Aging gets us to where we want to be, and that’s for me a long life. [Makeup artist] Kevyn Aucoin was so afraid of wrinkles and he never got them. I want wrinkles – but I Botox my forehead, so I am a hypocrite – but I want to grow old.”

The feature also delves into the challenges and obstacles the four models faced throughout their careers, such as the “grunge” era and the pre-#MeToo era. Despite working with photographers who have been accused of inappropriate behavior, the models shared that they largely avoided sexual exploitation. Crawford mentioned that she would intentionally avoid certain parties, while Turlington attributed it to luck and grace. Campbell credited her family for teaching her to speak up.

Edward Enninful, the outgoing editor-in-chief of British Vogue, styled all four models for the cover shoot. In his Editor’s Letter, Enninful discussed the decision to feature the quartet on the September issue cover, stating, “For such a hallowed moment, my esteemed co-conspirator Anna Wintour and I decided there was only one thing for it. We had to put the legendary quartet simultaneously on the cover of both British and American Vogues.”

The full feature can be found in the September issue of British Vogue, available through digital download and on newsstands from August 22nd. The Super Models documentary series will be accessible on Apple TV+ starting from September 20th.
