New Jersey Lt Gov Sheila Oliver dies after being hospitalised for undisclosed medical issue

New Jersey Lieutenant Governor Sheila Oliver has passed away at the age of 71, one day after being hospitalized. Oliver’s family confirmed her death in a statement, expressing their sadness and describing her as a distinguished public servant and beloved family member. Governor Phil Murphy, who was abroad at the time, expressed his grief and called Oliver a trailblazer who was the ideal partner for him to lead the state. The cause of her death has not been released.

Oliver, a Democrat, made history in 2010 as the first Black woman to serve as Speaker of the General Assembly and the second Black woman in US history to lead a state house legislature. She was chosen as Governor Murphy’s running-mate in 2017 and again in 2021. In addition to being Lieutenant Governor, Oliver also oversaw the Department of Community Affairs, which coordinates state aid to towns and cities.

Born and raised in Newark, Oliver had a degree in sociology from Lincoln University and began her political career in 1996 when she was elected to the Essex County board of chosen freeholders. She had served on the New Jersey assembly since 2004 and was known for her unique perspective and her dedication to serving the public. Governor Murphy described her as an inspiration to millions of women and girls, particularly those of color.

Tributes poured in for Oliver from state and national politicians. Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey called her death a tremendous loss and praised her as a trailblazer, while Senator Bob Menendez described her as a relentless voice for the voiceless and a champion for important issues. The family has requested privacy at this time and will provide details of a memorial service at a later date.

Her passing leaves a void in New Jersey’s political landscape, as Oliver was not only an accomplished public servant, but also a cherished family member and friend. Her legacy as a trailblazer and advocate for the disadvantaged will long be remembered.
