Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has acknowledged that former President Donald Trump lost the 2020 presidential election in an interview with NBC News. In an attempt to recalibrate his campaign, DeSantis initially provided a dodgy answer to the question, stating that whoever is inaugurated on January 20th is considered the winner. However, when pressed further, he admitted that President Joe Biden defeated Trump.

DeSantis did mention that there were irregularities in the election, pointing to the increase in mail-in ballots due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the distribution of grants to election administrators by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. He stated that while he did not think the election was conducted well, Republicans also failed to fight back against these irregularities.

Last week, DeSantis also disputed Trump’s claims of election rigging, specifically refuting the notion that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro had manipulated the results. He explained that although he believed the election was not conducted in an ideal manner, there was no evidence to support the claims of widespread fraud.

In the interview, DeSantis criticized Trump for listening to Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. He argued that the reliance on Fauci’s guidance led to the implementation of lockdowns and the funding of mail-in ballots through the CARES Act.

DeSantis is currently working to revive his campaign, as he only managed to raise $20 million in the first fundraising quarter, and his poll numbers trail significantly behind Trump. He emphasized the need to make the election a referendum on Biden’s policies and failures, presenting a positive vision for the future. According to DeSantis, if the election becomes a referendum on the events of January 6th, 2021, or other insignificant details, the Republicans will likely lose.

In conclusion, Governor Ron DeSantis has admitted that Donald Trump lost the 2020 election and is now attempting to reshape his campaign. He acknowledged the election’s irregularities but also criticized Trump’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. DeSantis is determined to make the upcoming election a referendum on President Biden’s policies to increase Republican chances of success.
